JAPANESE GRAND PRIX - RACE
It was a frustrating 2017 Japanese Grand Prix for the McLaren-Honda team. Fernando Alonso finished P11 and just outside of the points, with team mate Stoffel Vandoorne losing valuable positions in the first lap of the race. Vandoorne made a good start from P9 on the grid but was forced onto the grass in the Esses complex. Despite the off, he made up ground again, before getting stuck behind Lance Stroll. Stoffel had better pace than the Williams but was unable to find an overtaking spot around the twisty Suzuka track. He eventually took the chequered flag in P14. Starting at the back of the grid, Alonso made good progress through the pack. His one-stop strategy and solid race pace saw him fighting for P10 in the final laps. However, an untimely Virtual Safety Car period, plus blue flags, meant that he ran out of laps to snatch that final points paying position.
