4454.835 kilometres: that’s the distance covered by Honda Power Units at the first pre-season test that’s just ended at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit.
It’s an impressive number, but it’s far too early in the year to draw any conclusions. The main thing to take away from the past four days on track in Spain, is that Honda got through all its planned programme, looking mainly at system checks, driveability and tuning the settings to suit each of our four drivers’ driving styles. It wasn’t just the technical side of things we were testing, as this was also the first time in the hybrid era that Honda is supplying two teams. Learning to work with our new colleagues from Red Bull, as well as our old friends at Toro Rosso was another important aspect of these past few days.
All those kilometres produce a huge amount of data and between now and the second four-day test which starts next Tuesday, there’s a lot of number crunching and analysis going on in Sakura, Japan and Milton Keynes UK. With just a few days until the next test, many of the team will also be hard at work in Barcelona, as there’s really no time to head home in between the tests.
Those numbers in detail:
Alex Albon: 214 laps
Pierre Gasly: 238
Max Verstappen: 237
Daniil Kvyat: 214
A total of 957 laps, equivalent to 4454.835 Kilometres
