Today was the sixth day of pre-season testing and there was more of a buzz in the air in the Barcelona paddock as the pace hots up with just two days of testing left prior to the cars going out on track for the first free practice session in Melbourne in just 16 days time.
Within the Honda team, our work continues in terms of acquiring data and ensuring that everything goes smoothly on the PU front, so that our two teams can get on with their preparations, which at this stage involves trying different car set-ups, continuing to understand the Pirelli tyres and getting the drivers comfortable with their cars. Today we also see more pit-stop practices, because the operational side of a race weekend is as important as the performance aspect. Both Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing again completed a respectable mileage, with Daniil Kvyat doing 101 and Max Verstappen completing 128 laps. Some time was lost through red flags, because unlike a Grand Prix weekend, there are always fewer track marshals and vehicles to work with and, if a race car stops on track, it is always brought back to the team garage, whereas during a race weekend, it is left parked until the end of the session.
