The first of eight days of pre-season testing – split into two blocks of four days – got underway today at the Barcelona-Catalunya track. It was the first time in the hybrid PU era that Honda has had two teams running on track and everything went smoothly in both the Toro Rosso and Red Bull camps.
The Toro Rosso relationship is well established and so there was no “getting to know you” feeling in the garage. Even with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, solid winter preparation meant the session went off without a hitch. For the first day, PU work was mainly centred on system checks, while the team engineers did the same on the chassis side. Max Verstappen in the Red Bull completed 128 laps, setting the fourth fastest time of the day, while in the Toro Rosso camp, the returning Russian, Daniil Kvyat was in the cockpit and ended the day in sixth place on the timesheet, completing 77 laps of the track that will host the Spanish GP later in the year. Tomorrow, it’s the turn of their respective team-mates, Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon.
